Japanese Government Creating Internet Fasting Camp

The Japanese government are reportedly making plans to try and curb the latest epidemic that’s sweeping through the country: internet addiction. According to reports, it is estimated that over 500,000 Japanese children aged between 12 and 18 may be seriously addicted to the internet.

The cure to this rather startling problem? According to the Japanese government, it might just be Internet fasting camps.  The Ministry of Education in Japan intends to open the camps in 2014, allowing internet addicts to get rid of their mobile devices, computers and all other electronics and learn to live without them at last. Internet addicts will be able to see counsellors inside the camp, receive lectures and take part in outdoor activities.

Although Japan is the one taking steps against internet addiction, this is a recognised global phenomena which is affecting more people every year. It is impossible to know yet whether or not these camps will work, but Japanese internet addicts will at least benefit from the chance to cope with their problems. Symptoms of internet addiction are very similar to the symptoms of every other addiction: depression, affected sleeping patterns, problems keeping up with work or school, and a sense of guilt just to name a few.

Netflix shows to be in 4K from now on

Netflix CEO Reed Hastings has announced that all future Netflix original programming will be shot and finished in 4K, to match the ever-growing popularity of 4K televisions all over the world. Brands like Sony and Samsung are promoting their 4K televisions, and a partner like Netflix is integral to their success. Hastings has emphasized on the importance of making 4K available for streaming for everyone, with the Netflix Ultra HD service working at bitrates of under 15Mbps. This means that even if you don’t happen to have FiOS, you will still be able to enjoy the same 4K quality as those who do.

Meet the world’s first internet-controlled oven

If you’ve ever worried about a late lunch because you haven’t made it home from the supermarket yet, fear not! The Dacor Discovery iQ is here to remedy just that. The Disovery iQ is a “smart oven” which allows you to control it from your phone, and even functions as a completely capable Android tablet. It uses smartphone-esque software to communicate with your device. Wherever you are in the world – and as long as you’re connected to the internet – you can control the temperature of your oven, turn it on and off, and receive notifications about your meal. The oven can even determine whether your meal is ready or not without you having to stand guard over it. Unfortunately the price tag is enough to dampen anyone’s enthusiasm – at $12,000, the Discovery iQ isn’t exactly a bargain buy. Smart oven, yes – affordable, not really!

South African mobile network launches rural internet cafes

South African mobile operator MTN has launched the eStreet mobile internet café project, which will give clients 24/7 internet connectivity. This initiative will be particularly focused on rural areas where internet connections are sparse, and where the company is hoping it will be able to encourage its customers to get better use out of the world of the internet.

Vietnamese Government Fines Critical Social Media Users

Have you ever whined about politics on Facebook or Twitter? Thanks to a new law passed in Vietnam this week, that ‘misuse’ of social media may be enough to warrant a fine of over $4,700.

First reported by Reuters, Vietnam’s new law makes it possible for authorities to issue fines of up to 100 million dong ($4,740 to be exact) to anyone who is caught criticizing the government on social media. An attempt to crackdown on the number of political dissidents who speak out against the communist regime, this new law is only the tip of the iceberg. In previous years, Vietnamese bloggers and political commentators have seen an increasing rate of arrests and convictions, making social media a plausible next step for the communist regime.

T-Mobile to purchase 700MHZ band from Verizon to boost LTE coverage

The war between AT&T and T-Mobile is raging, and the latter has just thrown down the gauntlet. The wireless network quality, the company announced, would be improved significantly through a new deal with rival carrier Verizon. T-Mobile is paying Verizon about $2.37 billion for spectrum on the coveted 700MHz band that it will use to boost its LTE coverage. This would cover more than 150 million people in the US and would encourage a spike in in-building coverage in particular. There’s only one issue for the company and that’s rural areas, where T-Mobile coverage is already low as it is: the new spectrum will only really address major metro areas.

Pirate Bay working on new “anti-censorship” browser

The Pirate Bay has announced a new way to delude copyright agencies, which would mean using some very particular software to make its site accessible only to a certain network. “The goal is to create a browser-like client to circumvent censorship, including domain blocking, domain confiscation, and IP-blocking,” a Pirate Bay insider stated. The majority of the site would be hosted locally, with users of the Pirate Bay effectively using it the way they would use any normal program – for example, logging in would allow them to receive updates every time. A new DNS system is to be implemented that would make it impossible for copyright enforcers to track individual IP addresses. While the program is still being worked on, Pirate Bay insiders say that the browser agent would be released in a matter of months. It will also be made available as plugin for Firefox and Chrome, and as a standalone app.

São Paulo Wi-Fi Scheme Cheaper than Expected
